Message	"Gear crunch" is a misnomer as the noise is not the gears but rather the damaged synchronizer teeth butting against one another as the driver tries furiously to jam them into contact during a shift. The only fix for bad synchros is replacement and unfortunately, this typically means replacing the offending gear that they are attached to.
